End of summer home energy-saving tips

Summer is almost over. School has started back again. Here are some home energy-saving tips researched by ENERGY STAR (a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency):
1. Install a programmable thermostat.
A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week. Through proper use of pre-programmed settings, ENERGY STAR says a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.
2. Seal your heating and cooling ducts.
Ducts that move air to-and-from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters. According to ENERGY STAR, sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent — and sometimes much more.
3. It’s time to change your filters.
Clogged filters cause your HVAC system to work harder (it’s like breathing through a paper bag), using more energy. This means that dirty filters cause you to write larger checks to the utility company!
4. Have your air conditioning system maintained by a professional company
Manufacturers recommend that you get your system checked and maintained once per year to save money on your electric bills.
