Eminent Former NSU Researcher Passes

Charles Yentsch, Ph.D., researcher at NSU’s Oceanographic Center (OC) from 1967-1970, recently passed away at the age of 85.  Yentsch, a well-known and accomplished ocean scientist, was married to Clarice Yentsch, Ph.D., adjunct professor at the OC who was one of the first 17 graduates of Nova University.

Yentsch was regarded as one of the great pioneers of modern oceanography, and one of the first to conceive of the potential of ocean color remote sensing. In 1985, he received a Ph.D., Honoris causa from Long Island University, Southampton, NY. In 1999, the American Association of Limnology and Oceanography presented Yentsch with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010, The Oceanography Society bestowed the honor of Nils Gunnar Jerlov Award and also named him a Fellow of The Oceanography Society.

Yentsch leaves his wife, Clarice, three sons and two granddaughters. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public service. Any gift may be sent to the Yentsch Scholarship Fund, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, 60 Bigelow Drive, East Boothbay, ME 04544, or Hospice-by-the-Sea, 1200 East Las Olas Blvd., Suite 202, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.
