DI Transfer Octavia Wilson is Newest Addition to Women’s Basketball Roster

5-9 shooting guard will have two years of eligibility with the Sharks

5-9 shooting guard will have two years of eligibility with the Sharks.

The Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team and head coach LeAnn Freeland are pleased to announce the signing of junior guard Octavia Wilson, transferring to NSU from Division I New Orleans.

Wilson, a 5-9 guard originally from Nicholasville, Kentucky, will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Sharks. As a freshman with the Privateers, she was the team’s leading scorer at 9.3 points per game, notching a career-high 21 points against North Carolina (including five 3-pointers). She also paced the team in 3-pointers made (46) and free throw percentage (.811), and fifteen times during her debut season (in all 29 games, with 23 starts), she was in double digits.

Last year, she appeared in all 27 games with 16 starts, at 6.3 points per, along with the team’s second-highest tally in 3-pointers made (25). She had double digits in four of her first seven games, including a season-best 15 against Grand Canyon.

“Tavie is a very experienced and skilled shooting guard,” said Freeland. “Her basketball IQ and her shooting ability, along with her desire to win, make her a great fit for our program.”

Following her high school career at Lexington Catholic, a perennial state powerhouse in Kentucky, she was rated 3 stars with an 87 grade by ESPN, as their No. 92 guard in the nation. She finished as the fifth-leading scorer in Lex Cath history with 1,797 points, and was named Honorable Mention All-State (Louisville Courier Journal) and First Team All-City (Lexington Herald Leader) after averaging 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in her final season with the Knights.

“Tavie proved herself quickly at the DI level and we expect her to contribute right away,” said Freeland. “Our program is excited to announce Tavie Wilson is a Shark.”
