CPS Students Volunteer in Haiti
Last May, several students from the Center of Psychological Studies (CPS), along with CPS professor Stephen Campbell, Ph.D., and Pastor Menes Jean-Louis, traveled to Haiti to help earthquake victims in their ongoing struggle to rebuild their lives.
The student volunteers were Ben Bachus, Jon Torres, Matt Young, Molly Wolfson, Marcy Jaslow, Julie Hamrick, Stephanie Livshitz, Marisa Byles, Lyndsay Henry, Karen Fenton, Jackie Hammelman and Kristie Brandt.
The group provided free mental health care, toys, school supplies, clothes, and food to the island’s residents. Supplies were distributed at two schools and at a police station.
CPS students administered group therapy to older adults and provided individual therapy to adolescents. In order to address the psychological needs of small children and to help them deal with their everyday struggles, the group played cards and board games with the children, listened to music, and laughed together as they attempted to learn each others’ language. The purpose of these exercises was to make the children feel that they can increase their own feelings of well being, even in the midst of a disaster.
Student Jon Torres said that everyone was amazed to discover that “even with all their misfortunes, people in Haiti still help each other anyway they can, they don’t complain, and they never give up.”
