The results of a study by Jessica Valenzuela, Ph.D., an assistant professor at NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies, were recently published in the May-Jun, 2013 edition of the American Journal of Health Promotion. The study, entitled “¡Hazlo bien! A participatory needs assessment and recommendations for health promotion in growing Latino communities,” investigated the health needs of a rapidly growing Latino community and understand priorities for developing culturally sensitive health promotion strategies.

Valenzuela has also published and presented on her work related to underserved minority youth diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, HIV, sickle cell disease, and obesity/type 2 diabetes. Her current research focuses on health disparities and community-based participatory research paradigms. Through her research, Valenzuela partners and consults with various community partners and service agencies to develop and expand community health promotion programs, increase cultural competency of providers, and improve the quality of care provided to children and families.

Valenzuela received her Ph.D., in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in pediatric health from the University of Miami. She completed her predoctoral internship training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a two-year NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Prior to joining the faculty at Nova, she collaborated in the development of the University of Cincinnati’s Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST) Community Engagement Core.
