CPS Faculty Member Provides Direction and Insight at Suicide Prevention Presentations

Scott Poland, Ed.D.

Scott Poland, Ed.D., associate professor at CPS and the co-director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at NSU, was the featured presenter on the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s webinar entitled, Responding After a Suicide: Best Practices for Schools. Viewed by approximately 800 people, the presentation highlighted practical strategies for schools to implement in the aftermath of a suicide.

The webinar also publicized Toolkit for Schools, which was recently released by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. The toolkit includes general guidelines for action, templates, and sample materials, and covers topics such as crisis response, helping students cope, working with the community, social media, and bringing in outside help. Poland was a reviewer and consultant on the Toolkit for Schools.

Additionally, Dr. Poland led a crisis prevention workshop at Kaukauna High School (Wisconsin). Attended by a broad coalition of parents, educators and community organizations, the group was formed after seven Fox Valley students committed suicide. The group’s mission is
to provide a sustained, community-wide response to the suicides.
