Couple Who Survived Holocaust to Share Story on Campus, April 17
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with Hillel of NSU and GenZ Project/NEXT GENERATIONS, will welcome Holocaust survivors Joe and Mary Eckstein to speak at NSU.

About the Speakers
Joe Eckstein was 15 when Germany occupied Hungary. He was the only person in his family to survive the Holocaust, avoiding work selections and beatings in Birkenau, and overcoming battles with pneumonia and typhus. He was liberated by the Russian army in 1945 while hiding in Auschwitz.
Eight years old when the Holocaust began, Mary Eckstein was forced into the Budapest Ghetto by the Arrow Cross Party. Mary remembers she “was always scared and hungry” throughout the ordeal, and her family was constantly trying to escape. She eluded death and was saved when the Russian army liberated Budapest in 1945.
After the Holocaust, Joe was drafted into the Hungarian Red Army, serving as a gunsmith. Mary returned to school and later became an optician. The Ecksteins married in 1955.
