Celebrating the Start of the Academic Year: Convocation, Sept. 6

To celebrate the start of the academic year, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host the 2011 Convocation ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 4:00 p.m. in the  Arena at the Don Taft University Center, North Court. A reception will be held on the South Court, immediately after.  This year’s Convocation features a keynote talk by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Díaz. He will be speaking on the college’s annual academic theme of “Truth and Power.”

Named one of the 20 top writers of the 21st Century by The New Yorker magazine, Díaz earned a 2008 Pulitzer Prize for his first novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which is the college’s selection for the First-Year Reading Program. His writing often focuses on the immigrant-family experience in America and the Dominican culture as it exists in the motherland and in the United States.

Also speaking at this year’s event will be Shanti Bruce, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of writing program in the college. Bruce received the 2011 Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Full-Time Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, recognized by peers for her strong commitment to student learning and student success.

Nova Southeastern University’s Dean’s List Scholars, students who earned the Dean’s List their first two semesters at NSU, will also be recognized during the ceremony.

Convocation is free and open to all in the NSU community. Tickets are not required for admission, but space is limited. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. For additional information, contact the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Office of the Dean at (954) 262-8236.
