New, Continuing Honors Students Recognized at Annual Fall Banquet
Students from the Undergraduate Honors Program joined faculty, administration, and distinguished members of university leadership for the fall 2011 Honors Banquet on Sept. 15. Hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, the annual event recognizes Honors students for their academic achievements and excellence.
Biana Modilevsky, an undergraduate Honors student who also serves as an Honors Advocate, converses with Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, during an ice-breaker “scavenger hunt” at the fall 2011 Honors Banquet on Sept. 15.
Following an activity designed to help students, faculty, and administrators meet each other, Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, welcomed the Honors students and recognized the distinguished guests from NSU present at the event. Rosenblum also recognized the Honors faculty members in attendance, noting that the Honors program meshes “the best and brightest students with the best and brightest faculty.” He also reminded the students that, as representatives of the program, they have an obligation to serve as role models to their classmates and peers.
Prior to dinner, Rosenblum introduced this year’s Honors Program student advocates: Farah Alli, Eduardo Carrera, Marissa Hoffman, Lauren Llorente, Andrew Mikhail, Siobhan Ming, Biana Modilevsky, and Roshni Patel.
Ten student recipients of the program’s First-Week Scholarship were then announced. Open to honors students new to NSU, within the first week of the semester, scholarship applicants are required to compose an essay explaining how they will benefit from, and contribute to, the Honors program. They must also secure two letters of recommendation from faculty members, whom they have met and connected with already in their short time at NSU.
This year’s scholarship recipients are Kamila Albert, Linea Cutter, Valentina Garcia Hoyos, Monica Miles, Jessica Millar, Michelle Nguyen, Komala Ramkissoon, Savana Simmons, Benjamin Slone, and Paige Swalley.
Nearly 300 talented and motivated students participate in NSU’s Undergraduate Honors Program. Administered through the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Office of the Dean, this multidisciplinary program for high-achieving undergraduate students provides a rich, four-year experience through directed curricula, co-curricular activities in and out of the classroom, and research experience.
The program is designed to challenge participants through intimate, intensive Honors courses and independent research pursued in collaboration with faculty mentors. Outside the classroom, networking opportunities connect Honors students to an ambitious community that encourages them to hone their analytical, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
