Computer Sciences School Professor and Doctoral Student Present on Creating Multimedia Tutorials

Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences professor Martha Snyder and doctoral student Becky Whittemore, co-presented at the SoftChalk Innovators in Online Learning Webinar Series on Dec. 2.

Their presentation, “Design Principles and Examples for Creating Effective Multimedia Tutorials,” focused on what a tutorial is, when to use a tutorial over another method of instruction, and how to structure and sequence a web-based tutorial.

Whittemore, a doctoral student in the computing technology in education program, is also a nurse practitioner/nurse educator in the metabolic clinic at Oregon Health and Science University and serves as a consultant to the Oregon Newborn Screening program. She is also an assistant professor in the online Graduate Public Health Program at University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.

The tutorial that Whittemore presented was a course assignment in her Instructional Design and Development course that has transpired into an online tutorial for the entire catchment area for the Newborn Screening Program.
