Computer Sciences School Alumnus Receives Research Grant from Amazon

Rita Barrios, Ph.D.

Rita Barrios, Ph.D.

Rita Barrios, Ph.D., alumna of NSU’s Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences, recently received an education research grant from Amazon Web Services (AWS). The AWS education research grant of $5,000 was awarded to Barrios to research digital forensics in the cloud.

Barrios states that research in digital forensics within the cloud is very limited at best. Her proposed research will not only consider the cloud space but also the mobile space as it is understood that more and more mobile devices are in use today that access cloud resources. By utilizing the Amazon cloud workspace, Barrios will be able to address these issues in an actual cloud environment rather than a simulated one of her creation, which will ensure a more accurate result. The research she is embarking on is an attempt to develop solutions and frameworks to support the investigative process as conducted by law enforcement personnel both at the local and federal levels.

Barrios completed her Ph.D. in Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Information Security in 2011. She currently serves as assistant professor in the Computer and Information Systems Department as well as working with the Center for Cyber Security and Intelligence Analysis at the University of Detroit Mercy.
