Computer Sciences School Alumnus Publishes Book on Mobile Technology for Healthcare
David Metcalf, Ph.D., a graduate of NSU’s Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences (GSCIS), co-authored a recently published book on mobile technology for healthcare entitled, mHealth: From Smartphones to Smart Systems.
The book provides a high-level and comprehensive survey of the emergence of mobile technology in healthcare. Mobile devices are part of an overall healthcare IT ecosystem that includes devices, peripherals, enterprise systems, cloud technology and the processes that support them. This book looks beyond the already-popular devices and apps associated with mHealth – the delivery of healthcare services via mobile communication devices, and explores the major role this technology could play as healthcare steers toward an architecture in which key decision making occurs at the point-of-care. Metcalf expects in its fullest flowering, mHealth will serve as the catalyst that effectively addresses healthcare’s most intractable problems—quality, efficiency, and cost—and will form the centerpiece of healthcare programs aimed at chronic disease management, population health, wellness and prevention.
Metcalf is currently Senior Researcher and Director of the Mixed Emerging Technology Integration Lab (METIL) for the Institute of Simulation and Training at University of Central Florida. Metcalf provides advisory services and develops new innovations in mobile technology for healthcare and other industries. The Mixed Emerging Technology Integration Lab that he leads has provided strategy and solutions for Johnson & Johnson, Google, Microsoft, Tufts, University of Miami, US Army, and Joint Forces among others. He is a frequent author and presenter in the learning and healthcare professions and stays active within the NSU community through adjunct assignments at GSCIS.
