Computer Sciences Alum Presents Paper at International Conference on System Sciences

James Brady, Ph.D.

James Brady, Ph.D., a 2010  graduate of the information systems program at NSU’s Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences, recently presented a paper entitled, “Securing Health Care: Assessing Factors that Affect HIPAA Security Compliance in Academic Medical Centers” during the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences in Kauai, Hawaii.

The paper was accepted in the Cyberinfrastructure for Public Health and Health Services Minitrack within the Information Technology Track following a double blind peer review, and was awarded a Best Paper Nomination.

The paper is a condensed version of his dissertation research, which discusses the HIPAA security compliance challenges facing healthcare organizations at this important time in U.S. history.  With the increasing reports of data security breaches among academic medical centers, steeper penalties for noncompliance, and new requirements of the HIPAA Security Rule by HITECH, Brady’s study is a timely indicator of the need to understand security during the current period of healthcare reform.

The paper was also published by the IEEE Computer Society as the Proceedings of the Forty-Fourth Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences.
