College of Pharmacy presents Stephanie Aleong Award to FDA
NSU’s College of Pharmacy held its annual NSU Fall Classic continuing education conference on Nov. 6 and 7 at the university’s Health Professions Division. The two-day event attracted more than 500 pharmacists. The conference’s highlight was the presentation of the Stephanie F. Aleong, J.D., National Patient Safety Award to the Food and Drug Administration. The award recognizes individuals or organizations whose efforts have helped advance patient safety. It was presented to Capt. Denise Toyer of the FDA’s Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology (OSE), who accepted it on behalf of the agency. The FDA was recognized for its efforts to reduce medical errors. Prior to accepting the award, Toyer made a presentation titled, “The FDA Initiative in Patient Safety: A National Organization’s Experience and Impact on Human Safety.”
Aleong, the award’s namesake, was an assistant law professor at NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center and died in Oct. 2008. Since her death, author Katherine Eban has written a book called Dangerous Doses, which chronicles Aleong’s crusade to reduce drug counterfeiters in America. The Aleong award is presented annually and housed in the College of Pharmacy.
