Scott Poland, Ed.D., professor at NSU’s College of Psychology

Scott Poland, Ed.D., professor at NSU’s College of Psychology, author, and internationally recognized expert on youth suicide and school crisis, will host a free webinar on suicide prevention and higher education.

Poland, a licensed psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist, is co-director of NSU’s Suicide and Violence Prevention Office. He has lectured and written extensively on suicide intervention, school crisis, youth violence, and related topics. His first book, Suicide in the Schools (Guilford, 1989), is considered a pioneer work. He recently co-authored Suicide in Schools (Routledge, 2015). He has appeared on television network news programs and presented more than 1,000 workshops worldwide.

He is the past president of the National Association of School Psychologists and a past prevention director of the American Association of Suicidology. He served as the director of psychological services (1982–2005) at a large Texas school district that received numerous state and national awards for its exemplary psychological services.

Suicide is among the top three leading causes of death among children, teens, and adults between the ages of 10 and 24. Numerous states have created legislation to address the role of schools in suicide prevention. These laws, however, vary from state to state.

In this webinar, Poland will focus on suicide prevention in higher education, addressing questions such as:

  • What is the status of the incidence of suicide in the college population, and what prevention programs are in place?
  • Are universities required to have suicide prevention programs?
  • What are the lessons regarding the prevention of lawsuits following student suicides?
