Scott Poland, Ed.D., a professor in Nova Southeastern University’s College of Psychology, recently presented the keynote address to more than 900 attendees at the Texas Suicide Prevention Symposium. The event was coordinated by the Texas Suicide Prevention Council and the Mental Health America of Texas, the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Dr. Poland’s presentation was titled, “Suicide Safer School!” and addressed the incidence of youth suicide and how it requires school and community collaboration to increase prevention efforts. Those in attendance learned effective, practical strategies to help prevent youth suicide. Dr. Poland and his wife Donna, a retired principal, also just completed the Suicide Safer Schools Plan for the state of Texas.
