Two adjunct professors at NSU’s College of Psychology were honored at the Florida School Counselor Association Convention. Other faculty and adjunct faculty members presented research at the convention held October 22–24, 2015, in Orlando, Florida.

Daniel Shapiro, Ed.D., adjunct professor at the college, was recognized as the 2015 Elementary School Counselor of the Year. Shapiro is the elementary-level school counseling supervisor at Broward County Public Schools and has worked at Bennett Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale. Shapiro was previously recognized as Broward County Teacher of the Year, and he was a 2014-2015 recipient of Florida Governor Rick Scott’s Shine Award presented to Floridians who have positively helped children through education. Shapiro received a master’s degree in school counseling and a doctoral degree in education from NSU.

Randi Schietz, Ph.D., was honored as the 2015 School Counseling Advocate of the Year. The award was based on her leadership and advocacy for school counseling in Palm Beach County. At NSU, Schietz is an adjunct faculty member who has supervised school counseling interns and practicum students. Schietz also mentors new school counselors and previously served as president of the Palm Beach School Counselor Association.

Schietz’s presentation at the convention discussed ways of easing the transition to middle school for girls utilizing “Girl Talk,” a program she developed to address issues of relational aggression among fifth-grade girls. The program is now delivered as part of a comprehensive school counseling program in Palm Beach County.

Other college faculty members also presented research.

Carolyn Berger, Ph.D., associate professor who chairs the college’s Department of Counseling, and Melissa Mariani, Ph.D., adjunct professor, spoke to conference participants about interdisciplinary approaches that foster college and career readiness.

Berger and Eric Thompson, Ph.D., assistant professor at the college, gave a presentation on systemic interventions to raise students’ college aspirations. Kimberly Martin-Donald, Ph.D., adjunct professor, spoke about key ways for school counselors to maximize their impact on students.
