College of Optometry Participates in ChampionShips Health Fair

ChampionShips Health Fair

New Orleans Saints linebacker Ray Shipman, fourth year students Kelsey Dietz and Wendy Gross, first year student Larezia Williams, third year student Caleb Saint Jean, second year student Samantha Kayser and Janet L. Leasher, O.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.O., associate professor and director of community outreach, NSU College of Optometry.

In celebration of Healthy Vision Month, the NSU College of Optometry was invited by New Orleans Saints linebacker and Miramar native Ray Shipman to participate in the ChampionShips Health Fair for underserved children at the Shirley Branca Park in his hometown.

NSU College of Optometry students and faculty provided eye health information on sports vision performance and engaged children and their parents in activities pertinent to sports vision.

“The experience of talking to kids and parents about getting their eyes tested and showing them the visual skills necessary to succeed in life benefited everyone, said Janet L. Leasher, O.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.O., associate professor and director of community outreach for the college. “With the Affordable Care Act’s new mandatory vision coverage for children that started in January 2014, every child should have their vision tested by an optometrist or ophthalmologist every year, regardless of age. The Eye Care Institute at NSU offers comprehensive vision services for children and people of all ages.”
