College of Health Care Sciences Five Years in the Making of EXSC 3859

The winter semester ended with the presence of Kristi Krueger and Channel 10 News on NSU’s campus to capture the story of EXSC 3850 Adapted Community Fitness Programming, a course five years in the making by Tobin Silver, Ph.D., CSCS, associate professor and practicum director, Exercise and Sport Science.

Silver created this course for undergraduate students in the Exercise and Sport Science major to gain experiential learning while developing, prescribing, and administering individualized fitness programs for Special Olympic Athletes. Through a partnership with Anamaria Cretu, an EXSC graduate and the Sports and Competition Manager for Special Olympics – Broward, he advanced the proposal to encompass a full immersion experience for EXSC students and Special Olympics athletes.

This course supports the community outreach mission of the college and the university, provides hands on experiential learning for undergraduates, and allows athletes in Special Olympics to be integrated into a course here at NSU. Specifically, the course fulfills one of Don Taft’s goals to fully integrate a college course with the Special Olympics. The Channel 10 story aired on April 27, 2017, where the course was publicized as the first in the United States to integrate Special Olympics in this fashion.
