College of Dental Medicine Employee Helps Raise $1,800 to Fight Pancreatic Cancer

Esther Weiner, operations, grants, and financial administrator at NSU’s College of Dental Medicine, joined 500 attendees for a 5K walk in November for pancreatic cancer hosted by NSU. Weiner, a pancreatic cancer survivor who has worked at NSU for 14 years, formed the six-member team called the “Dental Mavens” and raised $1,800 (and still counting) on behalf of the cause. “Many members of the dental faculty were kind enough to donate as well as friends and family all over the country, and I am so grateful for the support,” Weiner said.

Pancreatic cancer, often referred to as the silent killer, is one of the four deadliest cancers because most people are not diagnosed until the late stages. This year, over 43,000 people will be diagnosed and a mere 5 percent will survive. November is pancreatic cancer awareness month. For more information, visit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s website, www.pancan.org and find out how you can get involved.
