College of Dental Medicine Appoints New Research Dean

Ana Karina Mascarenhas, B.D.S., M.P.H., Dr.P.H., has been appointed associate dean of research, professor, and chief of the Division of Primary Care of NSU’s College of Dental Medicine.

Ana Karina Mascarenhas, B.D.S., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. has been appointed associate dean of research, professor, and chief of the Division of Primary Care of NSU’s College of Dental Medicine. She comes to NSU from the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where she is known for her superb work in public health.

Mascarenhas has a B.D.S. degree from Goa College and Hospital in India and also holds a M.P.H. and Dr.P.H. degrees from the University of Michigan, with an emphasis on oral epidemiology. She has held positions at The Ohio State University and the Forsyth Institute in Boston and recently served as professor of health policy and health series research at Boston University serving as the graduate program director and residency director for dental public health. Most recently, Mascarenhas has been the project director for Boston University’s Robert Wood Johnson Community-Based Dental Education Program. The aim of the program is to recruit disadvantaged students to the dental profession. As a conse­quence of her success, she was awarded an HRSA grant to extend the disadvantaged pipeline project to New Hampshire.

Mascarenhas serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Public Health Den­tistry, the Journal of Evidence-Based Practice, and is a statistical consultant for Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Endodontics. She also chairs the Health and Human Resource Administration Independent Review Panel and has served on study sections for NIH and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality.

Mascarenhas, who serves as the president of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, is the recipient of numerous research grants and contracts at the institutional, state, foundation, and federal levels. She also has more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals and more than 40 abstracts.
