Col. Arthur Athens Speaks at Fischler School Graduate School Commencement Ceremony, June 12

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler School of Education will host its 2011 Graduate School Commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 12 at 4 p.m. at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise.
The NSU community is invited to join in recognizing the hard work, dedication and accomplishments of this latest group of more than 700 NSU education graduates from the Fischler School, which is one of the largest schools of education at an accredited university in the United States.
“Commencement celebrates students’ successful completion of their academic programs,” said H. Wells Singleton, Ph.D., Dean of NSU’s Fischler School. “Our school’s alumni become leaders in education and related professions throughout the U.S. and in dozens of other nations, and we are immensely proud of them.”
The school also welcomes as its commencement speaker Colonel Arthur Athens, Director of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership and a member of the Academy’s Senior Leadership Team.
Athens retired from the Marine Corps in July 2008 with more than 30 years of combined active duty and reserve service. As a Marine Officer, he commanded units in the 3rd and 4th Marine Aircraft Wings, served with the U.S. Space Command and instructed at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1. Additionally, he was a White House Fellow under President Ronald Reagan, the Special Assistant to the NASA Administrator following the Space Shuttle Challenger accident, the Commandant of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and the Naval Academy’s first Distinguished Military Professor of Leadership.
Athens has also been a volunteer lacrosse coach at the high school and collegiate levels and the Washington Post recognized him as their High School Coach of the Year in 2005.
