Circle of Friends hosts “Marjorie and Marjory” at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library
The Circle of Friends for the NSU Alvin Sherman Library recently turned back the clock in an event featuring Florida historian and literary scholar Betty Jean Steinshouer, who portrayed authors and friends Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Marjory Stoneman Douglas…right down to the hat, dress, dialect and tone.
The event, free and open to the public, and held in the Adolfo and Marisela Gallery was supported by the Florida Humanities Council with funding from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. Florida Humanities Council is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities which funds and coordinates statewide public humanities programs and publications that explore the people, places, and ideas that shape our state.
Ms. Steinshouer injected her vast historical knowledge of each author, along with humor, into her insightful, animated and comedic rendition, even taking questions while still in character, truly bringing these literary figures of Florida’s history to life. Members of the audience commented that they felt like they were actually conversing with the treasured authors themselves.
The Circle of Friends’ purpose is to raise funds to support the efforts of the NSU Alvin Sherman Library. Contributions help purchase resources and learning tools used at important programs such as All Stars, a special storytime designed for children with autism, and important research materials for NSU students and faculty as well as the community.
