Circle of Friends for the Alvin Sherman Library hosts an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe
The Circle of Friends for the Alvin Sherman Library hosted a “spooktacular” event on October 18 as “Edgar Allan Poe” took us back in time and shared his timeless works; Annabel Lee, The Raven… and more (or “nevermore”)! The guests were treated to a performance by Broadway and film veteran Duffy Hudson, who brought his dramatic talent and fascination for Edgar Allan Poe to life in a one-man play. Using a combination of biographical information and the dramatic interpretation of Poe’s literature, Annabel Lee, The Raven and The Tell Tale Heart, Hudson provided a unique, in-depth theatrical experience of the life and works of one of America’s best-known and enigmatic personalities.
The event was held in the Adolfo and Marisela Cotilla Gallery in the Library, which was transformed into a tavern with a spooky theme, complete with ravens and other special effects. Tavern food was served, and some guests even dressed accordingly.
Circle of Friends’ purpose is to raise funds to support the efforts of the NSU Alvin Sherman Library. Events like this, along with donations help purchase resources and learning tools used at important programs such as All Stars, a special storytime designed for children with autism, and important research materials for NSU students and faculty as well as the community.
In addition to knowing that their support enhances the Library, members receive invitations to various events in the Sherman Library and the University including author and speaker events, gallery exhibits etc. Other membership benefits include extended borrowing privileges, 10% discounts to purchases in the gift shop at the NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, and at the NSU Barnes and Noble bookstore (except textbooks and electronics).
Special thanks to underwriters Circle of Friends President Larry Maurer, and his wife Susan, and Past President, Adolfo Cotilla and his wife, Marisela. Also, special thanks to The Boston Beer Company for generously donating the Samuel Adams Beer, and to Ronnie Oller, Event Chair.
