Chancellor Ray Ferrero Jr. Receives NSU Lifetime Achievement Award

President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., presents the NSU Lifetime Achievement Award to Chancellor Ray Ferrero, Jr., J.D.

Nova Southeastern University Chancellor Ray Ferrero Jr., J.D., was recently presented with Lifetime Achievement Award for providing opportunities for research at NSU. The presentation was made during the University’s External Funding Recognition Reception which took place Sept.21 at the Grande Oaks Golf Club.

Ferrero recognized the need for research growth and created ways to enhance and support the research effort at this University. His efforts have cultivated the research talents of existing faculty, supported established NSU researchers, nurtured junior faculty embarking on their research career, and brought talented new research faculty to NSU to help build our research program. Two programs are living legacies to the Chancellor’s initiatives.

First, the Faculty Research and Development Grant Program, established in 1999, was designed to bring recognition and funding to the university’s full-time faculty members as they attempt to secure resources in support of research activities. Each spring, NSU faculty across the university compete for these grants that award up to $10,000. In the twelve-year history of these awards, 660 faculty members and 198 students have shared $2,448,376 in financial support. Grant winners have come from each of the university’s 16 academic schools. The Faculty Research & Development Grant program continues to be successful in meeting its goals of fostering inquiry, research, and creative professional activity at Nova Southeastern University.

A second initiative established by Chancellor Ferrero is the Quality of Life program. In 2002, in response to community needs, Chancellor Ferrero formed the Quality of Life Council to bring NSU faculty, administrators and students together with community leaders to identify and solve Broward County’s most serious problems.  Through his initiative, Chancellor Ferrero was able to successfully connect NSU and the Broward County community to address real world relevant problems in our own backyard.  Since its inception the Quality of Life Council has sponsored a total of 26 faculty community-based applied research projects through its $10,000 annual research award. The Quality of Life Council is now represented by more than 25 members, consisting of Nova Southeastern University and community leaders who share the same mission to serve the community and effect positive and lasting change through community based applied research.

An annual event, the External Funding Recognition Reception recognizes the efforts of NSU faculty and staff who received external grant funding in the last fiscal year. Fiscal year 2011 saw great progress in the area of external funding, which in total exceeded $76 million. The reception serves to honor the extraordinary efforts of those who contributed to this milestone and to encourage the continued pursuit of additional external funding.
