Ceremony Honors Memorial and Recognition Scholarship Recipients, Donors
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences hosted a ceremony and reception at NSU on Apr. 28, recognizing undergraduate students who earned memorial and recognition scholarships offered by the college. The scholarships were established by university and college donors to honor loved ones while assisting NSU students in achieving their collegiate goals.
On hand to congratulate the students receiving the awards were several friends and family members of the recipients, scholarship donors, and faculty and staff members from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, including Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the college, who provided welcome remarks at the ceremony.
—The Alvin Sherman Family Scholarship provides funding (for up to four years) to new NSU students in either the Career Development or Professional and Liberal Studies programs. Receiving the scholarship were Guadalupe Almanza, Guadalupe Mendez, Sneha Philip, Susanna Ruiz-Achong, and Talhia Sanchez.
—The Ellen Dix Thompson Living Legacy Scholarship supports English majors for up to two years. On hand to honor the recipients was donor Amanda Allen Thompson, accompanied by her mother-in-law, Ellen Dix Thompson, for whom the scholarship is named. Receiving the award was Genevieve Macaisa.
—The Linda Gordon Memorial Scholarship was created by the college in memory of former professor of humanities Linda Gordon. Gordon taught literature and composition in the college from 1990 to 2004 and had a passion for travel, nature, and art. The award provides financial assistance to continuing students in the college who share her creative approach to education, including travel and a commitment to social and environmental concerns. Student Lucy Flores received the scholarship at this year’s ceremony.
—The Melissa Britt Lewis Scholarship honors the Shepard Broad Law Center alumna who was killed in Mar. 2008. The award supports undergraduate students majoring in legal studies. On hand at the ceremony to honor the student recipients were Wayne and Lisa La Pointe, Melissa’s parents.
—The college offers the Stolzenberg-Doan Scholarship to support students who have completed a college-sponsored Travel Study course. Attending the ceremony to present the scholarship was contributor Jim Doan, Ph.D., professor in the college. The scholarship is named in memory of Doan’s grandparents and his mother to honor their commitment to furthering knowledge of languages, history, and cultures of other nations. Among those students receiving the scholarship were Corynne Dignan and Emma Magner.
Scholarship recipients from past years as well as alumni were also in attendance. Some current-year recipients of the Alvin Sherman Family Scholarship, Melissa Britt Lewis Scholarship, and the Stolzenberg-Doan Scholarship were unable to attend the event.
