Pizza Loft & Center for Autism and Related Disabilities Host Family Night
Local restaurant Pizza Loft, along with the UM-NSU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD), recently hosted a night for families with members who have Autism Spectrum Disorders.
“It was a great event that allowed families to come together and have a night out at a restaurant,” said Marlene Sotello-Bumberg, Ed.D., Assistant Director of Educational Services for UM-NSU CARD. “Families were able to enjoy a meal without having to endure the whispers and stares of other diners, which can be a complication of eating out when you have a family member with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.”
The event also garnered local media coverage, such as this article from the Miami Herald: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/22/1592651/a-night-out-for-families-with.html
The UM-NSU CARD, based at NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services, currently serves more than 5,000 families in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe. It provides free family support, outreach, and educational support services to children and adults of all levels of intellectual functioning who have autism and autistic-like disabilities. In operation since 1993, the UM-NSU CARD is a Florida Department of Education project funded by an appropriation from the state legislature.
