Celebrate Black History Month 2014 with FREE NSU Events All February Long
NSU will honor Black History Month in February 2014 through a variety of activities including an engaging art exhibition, performances, film screenings, dynamic speakers, compelling educational and health workshops, and discussions for all ages.
Highlights of the month-long celebration include:
- The 11th Annual African Presence Art Exhibition, Witness to History: The Photography of Ernest Withers. Withers photographed many unsettling episodes of the 50s and 60s. His images of the gruesome racial murder of teenager Emmitt Till still resonate to this day; he captured photos of the nine students who integrated Little Rock Central High School; and his camera shutters snapped just moments after Martin Luther King was assassinated. Exhibition opens Jan. 31 and runs through March 16
- Discussions about Musical Soul on Feb. 1; if Black History Month is still relevant in the 21st century on Feb. 3; and the Fight for African American Civil Rights on Feb. 13
- Documentary screenings & discussion of Slavery by Another Name on Feb. 9; and A Spike Lee Joint movie viewing on Feb. 10; and Tuesday Night Movie on Feb. 18
- Special performances by the Jason Hainsworth Jazz Quartet on Feb. 16; Book signing with cultural anthropologist Rosalyn Howard, Ph.D., who will speak about her new book, African Presence in Spanish Florida: Black Seminoles on Feb. 20
- Creative artists performing during Poetry & Spoken Word Night on March 13
- Special Community Health workshops and screenings; family and children’s entertainment, and much, much more!
Unless otherwise noted, all events are FREE and open to the public, and will be held at NSU’s main campus. More events are being added all the time — for the latest updates, please visit: www.nova.edu/blackhistory.
