Cast Your Vote for the 2018 ASM Agar Art Contest
Students enrolled in ARTS 3700 Methods and Materials, taught by Kandy G Lopez-Moreno, M.F.A., assistant professor in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, are challenged to create effective artworks utilizing a variety of art materials. In a workshop led by Katie Crump. Ph.D., assistant professor in the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, the art students were faced with their greatest challenge yet – to create meaningful works of art using BACTERIA! During the workshop, students learned how to use a variety of colorful agars as their canvas and several different species of bacteria as their paint.
For the third year in a row, the students’ artworks were entered in the American Society for Microbiology’s (ASM) Agar Art contest. ASM received 155 Agar Art entries from across the globe. Entries were judged and 50 finalists were chosen. One of our student’s submissions, titled “Emotion” by senior psychology major and studio arts minor, Aina Rivas, was chosen as a finalist.
“Emotion” is considered for a People’s Choice Award to be decided by a public Facebook contest. You can cast your vote by clicking on http://bit.ly/AgarArtVoting and “liking” the agar art for which you like to vote. The contest deadline is May 15th, 2018.
