New Cardiovascular Sonography Program offered at Tampa SEC

NSU’s College of Allied Health and Nursing is pleased to announce the approval of the master’s and bachelor’s of health science degree with a concentration in cardiovascular sonography at the Tampa Student Educational Center (SEC). This program, one of only a few in the country, is designed to train sonographers in the specialties of both cardiac and vascular ultrasound. Students will have an option to enter either the bachelor’s or master’s track depending on their academic prerequisites. Graduates will be eligible to sit for national registry examinations provided by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) or Cardiac Credentialing International (CCI). Classes are scheduled to begin in July of 2011.

Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create images of the soft tissue structures of the body such as the heart, arteries, and veins. These images are created in real-time, which means the images are updated in order to show actual motion of the heart chambers, valves, and vessel walls. Doppler ultrasound is used in combination with the imaging to demonstrate the movement of blood flow through the vascular structures.

The cardiovascular sonographer is a skilled professional in high demand. If you are interested in researching this program further please see our website at www.nova.edu/cah/healthsciences/cardiovascular.
