Nova Southeastern University Hosts Fifth Annual SeussFest! Sunday, March 5
Would you come in a car; would you come from near and far?
The South Florida community is invited to come out to Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus for the fifth-annual Seussfest. The event is scheduled from noon – 4 p.m. Sunday, March 5 in-front and inside of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd., Fort Lauderdale – Davie, FL 33314. The event is FREE.
Some of the Seussical fun includes a petting zoo, Seussified face painting, music, magic demonstrations, theater performances and much more. In addition, while supplies last, every child attending SeussFest will be given a FREE BOOK to help encourage a love of reading.
There will also be special appearances by The Cat in the Hat, and Sharkey, the official mascot of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library!
Seussfest is a one-day family event that touches the hearts of South Florida’s children. It is part of the Read for the Fun of It! initiative that began in January, 2013 by NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, an academic library open to the public.
The Read for the Fun of It! initiative is a five-year commitment supported by the Erwin and Barbara Mautner Charitable Foundation, which focuses on enhancing family literacy through community outreach and engagement. Seussfest is the signature event of this initiative and takes place annually on the first Sunday in March in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Since opening in 2001, NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library has addressed early literacy issues by creating innovative and unique weekly, monthly, and seasonal programming and events recognizing the importance of the entire family. The Read for the Fun of It! initiative has enabled the library to expand its community outreach with new initiatives such as “Raise A Reader” parent support, summer library reading rewards incentives, a Young Authors Workshop (a teen creative writing program), and, of course, Seussfest.
Over the past four years, Seussfest has become a signature event in the community with attendance growing from 900 people in 2013 to 4,000 people attending in 2016, and more expected at this year’s event. To support the literacy mission, every child that attends Seussfest receives an age appropriate free book. Last year, more than 2,500 new books were distributed to children.
