CAHSS Welcomes Fulbright Scholar Sudha Ragunathan

Sudha Ragunathan and students in Music of the World Cultures

Honggang Yang, Ph.D., dean of NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is delighted to announce that Fulbright Scholar Sudha Ragunathan has joined the college for the winter term. Ragunathan is one of India’s foremost Carnatic vocalists. A disciple of the legendary Padma Bhushan, Dr. M. L. Vasanthakumari, Ragunathan has evolved a style of her own where the soul of her music lies in the dynamism of presentation. More than 200 compact and video discs, covering a range of compositions in various languages and genres of her music, have been released.

Ragunathan has performed in a variety of countries including, Tunis, Israel, Myanmar, Norway, Switzerland, France, and Belgium. She performed at the UN for the International Day of Non-Violence in 2016, only the second Carnatic musician to do so. In 2015, she was a recipient of Padmabhushan, the third highest civilian award from the government of India. Ragunathan received Sangita Kalanidhi, the highest recognition for performing artists from the prestigious Madras Music Academy in 2013.

Ragunathan is working with the Department of Performing and Visual Arts (DPVA). She has presented on the music of India in the Music of World Cultures class in DPVA and looks forward to many opportunities to engage with students.
