CAHSS to Host “Mediating Ocean and Coastal Conflicts amid Climate Change,” Sept. 25
Peace Place, a part of Community Resolution Services (CRS) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, will host a workshop titled “Mediating Ocean and Coastal Conflicts amid Climate Change,” on Sunday, September 25 from noon-1:30 p.m. in NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library.
The presenter, Melodee Smith, J.D., Ph.D., is a doctoral graduate of CAHSS in Conflict Analysis and Resolution. Smith has served on the South Florida community working group to protect ocean reefs amid climate change and is currently conducting research through CRS. She practices Environmental Law and Policy Dispute Resolution.
Climate change is prompting a collaborative approach to developing policy and resolving conflicts among stakeholders who unite to protect ocean and coastal resources. Applying a mediated negotiation framework to integrated coastal zone management, different mediation models are explored. Interest-based, evaluative, facilitative, narrative and transformative mediation methods are introduced to examine ocean and coastal case study conflicts. Distinguishing between different mediation models, the most appropriate mediation method will be determined based on an understanding of the issues and the goals of the stakeholders. Skills to identify and develop communication and conflict resolution skills required to be an effective mediator will be practiced.
For more information, please contact Cathy Knoll in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies at 954-262-3058 or via e-mail at knoll@nova.edu. The event is free and all are invited.
