Four undergraduate students in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CASHSS) presented at the National Conference on College Composition and Communication in Portland Oregon, which was held March 16, 2017 (http://www.ncte.org/cccc/conv). The CCCC supports and promotes the teaching and study of college composition and communication. The student-presenters were: Priya Chopra, Sami Epstein, Karina Lozano, and Morgan Musgrove.

Student researchers highlighted their hands-on approach to constructing a community-based literacy center at a local at-risk educational center in Ft Lauderdale. In their poster titled “Collaborative Mentoring in Creating a Community Based Literacy Center,” they discussed the significance of cultivating relationships with high school students at an at-risk learning center, and explained the benefits of relying on the values of reciprocity and empathy. Students are all interns under the guidance of Juliette Kitchens, Ph.D., and Kelly Concannon, Ph.D., professors of WRIT 4950 (“Internship in Writing,”) which is housed in the Department of Writing and Communication.
