CAHSS Student Serves as an Intern with the Council on Hemispheric Affairs in DC
Sophie-Anne Baril
Sophie-Anne Baril, a senior International Studies major in the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), was selected for a ten-week internship last year at the Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) in Washington, DC. Baril served as a research associate and website manager. As part of her internship she was responsible for researching topics and then writing articles. Her articles have appeared in the Washington Report on the Hemisphere and online at www.coha.org. Thus her articles have reached out to audiences around the world.
“Without a doubt, my coursework at NSU prepared me for my internship at COHA,” Baril said. “I was able to meet deadlines and apply my understanding of research methods.”
Baril said that her knowledge of history and international relations helped and with her academic background, she was able to frame arguments easily and support the main points in her articles with relevant information. The internship with COHA allowed her to have more research and writing experiences as well as to make great connections. She believes that it has given her a better understanding of the field of International Affairs.
“I am certain that I will be able to use what I learned in the “real” world during my internship in many different and creative ways.”
