CAHSS Researchers Receive Grant Extension
NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is pleased to announce the extension of a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse titled, “The South Beach Project II: A Self-Assessment Intervention for Young Adult Polydrug Users.”
The grant’s principal investigator is Steven P. Kurtz, Ph.D., director of The Center for Applied Research on Substance Use and Health Disparities (ARSH) and professor in the Department of Justice and Human Services. Hilary L. Surratt, Ph.D., is a co-investigator and is affiliated faculty from the Center for Health Services Research, College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Mance E. Buttram, Ph.D., is co-investigator, the associate director of ARSH and assistant professor in NSU’s Department of Justice and Human Services.
This extension of $250,000 will allow the researchers to continue to perform data analyses, publish and present their findings. The parent grant was an 18-month longitudinal natural history study of 600 club and prescription drug using young adults. A key finding from that study is the extent to which the comprehensive health and social risk assessments induced participants to reduce their substance use and sexual risk behaviors.
