CAHSS Hosts the 2nd Annual Story Café in the Alvin Sherman Library

Some Participants from Story Cafe 2016

The Alvin Sherman Library was the site of the 2nd Annual Story Cafe hosted by Peace Place, a part of Community Resolution Services (CRS) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS). The event was held in partnership with the Social Justice Roundtable and the CAHSS Graduate Student Government Association.

Story Café, which was free and open to the public, engaged participants in sharing stories related to themselves, society, and the topic of gender, using narratives and any collateral materials (photographs, poems, etc.) Participants were at tables with graduate students from CRS as facilitators. After the story sharing, participants were invited to create artifacts using blank masks, markers, and other materials .The masks could represent how participants portrayed themselves to society, and another could represent how they would like to portray themselves, or whatever else would be meaningful. CRS reached out to the Department of Performing and Visual Arts (DPVA) for suggestions regarding this year’s artifacts.

Opening remarks were provided by Judith McKay, J.D., Ph.D., CRS Director and Chair of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies, Suzette Henry-Campbell, doctoral candidate in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and Richard Toumey, M.F.A., adjunct professor in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies. Toumey was the main group facilitator for the event.

CRS is a practicum and volunteer site for students to enhance their knowledge and skills and to provide services to NSU and local communities. CRS offers trainings, workshops, and other services to help foster peaceful families, organizations, and communities. Peace Place, a part of CRS, is a long standing collaboration between CAHSS and the Broward County Library to provide presentations and events by students and faculty to the community.
