CAHSS Hosts “Ice Cream Entrepreneur Program” for High School Students

Ice Cream Entrepreneur Program August 2017

NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) hosted a 5 day, “Ice Cream Entrepreneur Program” for 24 students from over 20 high schools. Students were placed into 5 groups and each group was responsible for creating a new ice cream flavor, a promotional poster, a promotional campaign and a marketing pitch to the judges.

Students visited Yo Mama’s Ice Cream in Ft. Lauderdale to learn about making ice cream and the business side of ice cream sales from Lee Feldman, owner and partner . They subsequently finalized flavor recipes and names and with the help of Laurie Menekou Ernst-Jones, a local PR/advertising firm owner and entrepreneur, designed and printed a promotional poster as well as working on a promotional campaign. On the final day, each team presented their flavor to the judging panel and an audience of friends, family, and NSU personnel, including CAHSS Dean Honggang Yang, Ph.D.

The judging panel included; Lee Feldman, owner of Yo Mama’s Ice Cream (cast the deciding vote), Liza Romansky, M.S., Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and faculty from the Department of Writing and Communication DWC): Janine Morris, Ph.D., Molly Scanlon, Ph.D., Eric Mason, Ph.D., Star Vanguri, Ph.D., and Whitney Lehman, Ph.D. The winning flavor was called Beach Blonde, a combination of cookie dough ice cream with caramel, graham cracker sprinkle, cookie dough balls, and white chocolate chips.
