CAHSS Faculty Presents at Scripps College on “Fatness and the Politics of Desirability”
Andrea Shaw Nevins, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) was an invited panelist at Scripps College in Claremont, CA on March 24, 2017. The panel’s topic was, “Fatness and the Politics of Desirability.” Nevins is the author of the book, The Embodiment of Disobedience: Fat Black Women’s Unruly Political Bodies.
“I was excited to have an opportunity to discuss the relatively new field of fat studies, said Nevins. “In the academic world many scholars are exploring the ways imperatives of slenderness dismiss fat people and people of color from the beauty arena. The visit to Scripps was a great learning experience for me. My colleagues on the panel provided new insight on considerations related to how disability studies, gender studies, and fat studies intersect.”
