CAHSS Faculty Brings 13 Students from Genocide in the 20th Century and Beyond Class to Europe
Gary Gershman, J.D., Ph.D., professor in the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) escorted 13 students from his course, Genocide in the 20th Century and Beyond, to Krakow, Poland; the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp; Budapest, Hungary, and various locations in Serbia and Bosnia. The trip spans events like the Holocaust in the 1940s to the more recent Bosnian War of the 1990s. In Bosnia, students met with survivors from the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed. The course covers genocides around the world, including the Holocaust, the Balkans, Darfur, and Rwanda.
Gershman has been teaching courses on the Holocaust for 15 years. In 2017, he was awarded the Curt C. and Else Silberman Faculty Seminar Follow-Up Grant for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Gershman was one of two 2017 recipients and it enabled Gershman to be in residence for a month at the Mandel Center at the museum, with an office/work space. He received access to the archives, many of which are not open to the public. Gershman was able to work on Holocaust course curriculum development and collecting teaching materials. Gershman believes the trip provides opportunities for students to see beyond themselves and provides helpful perspectives.
