CAHSS Alum Presents at AFTA Conference in Austin, TX

Marcela Polanco, Ph.D.

Marcela Polanco, Ph.D., graduate of the doctoral program in the Department of Family Therapy (DFT) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), was a presenter at the 2018 American Family Therapy Association (AFTA) Conference held at the University of Texas at Austin on June 21-24, 2018. The theme of the conference was “Relational Activism: Supporting Just Relationships in Family Therapy.” Polanco’s topic was entitled, “Family Therapy Activism from Latin American DE colonial Perspectives: Inter-Cultural and Inter-Linguistic Solidarity.”

In addition to her doctoral degree from NSU, Polanco, originally from Columbia, studied psychology at Universidad de Los Andes and community psychology at Universidad Javeriana. She completed the International Diploma on Narrative Therapy and Community work at the Dulwich Centre, Adelaide, Australia. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). She teaches graduate family therapy courses and supervises Spanish teams. Polanco leads the family therapy master’s program and bilingual training certificate, and the Psychological Services for Spanish Speaking Populations (PSSSP).
