Business School Professor Publishes Articles on Leadership

Barry Barnes, Ph.D.

Barry Barnes, Ph.D., professor of management in the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, recently co-authored an article with John Humphreys, Jennifer Oyler, Stephanie Pane Haden and Milorad Novicevic. The article, which is titled, “Transcending the Power of Hierarchy to Facilitate Shared Leadership: The Historical, Counterculture Case of Jerry Garcia,” has been accepted for publication in the Leadership and Organizational Development Journal and will appear in the publication later in 2012.

The article responds to the call for communal forms of leadership to help provide contemporary organizations with more responsive leadership platforms. The authors examined the experiences and expressed beliefs of the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia to offer a counterintuitive, counterculture conceptualization of how shared leadership could emerge and flourish in traditional hierarchical settings.

In addition, Barnes wrote an article that appears in the August issue of Leadership Excellence titled “Inspiring Leadership – Example: Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead,” which offers eight lessons for effective and inspirational leadership. Among other lessons, Garcia demonstrated the importance of humility, inspiring greatness in others, offering a challenge, and building trust.

Lastly, Barnes also authored a chapter in a new book titled, Reading the Grateful Dead: A Critical Survey, edited by Grateful Dead Archivist Nicholas G. Meriwether. The chapter is titled “Jerry Garcia and Leadership Styles in the Grateful Dead Phenomenon.” Barnes examines Jerry Garcia and his influence on the Grateful Dead’s business and music as well as the legion of Deadhead followers. Using Greenfield’s Servant Leadership approach (1975) and Bass and Avolio’s Transformational Leadership model (1990) Garcia’s leadership is shown to be effective regardless of his stated reluctance to lead.
