BSO Holds Law Enforcement Summit at NSU
Nearly 100 personnel from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, including colonels, majors, chiefs, captains and other executive officers, attended the BSO’s Department of Law Enforcement Summit held for two days on NSU’s main campus. The summit meetings, which were held May 5 and 8, 2009, in the Horvitz Administration building, was hosted by NSU as part of the university’s partnership with BSO.
NSU President Ray Ferrero Jr. welcomed the BSO officers on the opening day of the summit on May 5. NSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Frank DePiano, Ph.D., welcomed the group on May 8.
The Department of Law Enforcement Summit provided command staff personnel with current laws, practices, programs and related materials in the areas of employment laws, system updates, legal proceedings and safe communities. The summit was led by Colonel Edward Werder, the executive director of BSO’s Department of Law Enforcement.
In addition to the meetings, BSO’s Mobile Command Post was stationed outside the Horvitz building on both days.
“The Broward Sheriff’s Office does tremendously important work for our community by keeping residents safe and improving our quality of life. In these days when criminal behavior is sophisticated and with the complexity of our legal system, I applaud the Sheriff’s Office for providing our law enforcement leadership with the best education available,” said Dr. DePiano. “We are very proud of this unique partnership with BSO and the university offers its full support of the agency and its employees.”
The partnership between NSU and BSO was developed nearly three years ago to create educational opportunities for BSO’s 6,300 employees. The scope of the relationship has broadened to include a multitude of other initiatives, including certificate and degree programs, conferences and professional development, research, and community outreach.
