Brown Named NCBWA Co-Coach of the Year, Garcia Player of the Year

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Associations has selected head coach Greg Brown as the South Region Co-Coach of the Year and Justin Garcia (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) as the South Region Player of the Year.

Brown has led the Sharks to a record breaking 2015 campaign, as the Sharks won the Sunshine State Conference for the first time in program history and posted a NCAA-era school record 38 wins. Joining West Alabama’s head coach Gary Rundles as South Region Co-Coach of the Year, Brown has his sights set on winning the NCAA South Region tournament this week.

Garcia adds his second Player of the Year award after being named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday afternoon. Garcia’s 24 home runs broke the school record of 17. Garcia’s current slugging percentage of .901 is the highest slugging percentage in the SSC since Tino Martinez slugged .957 in 1988.

After picking up All-SSC First Team honors on Tuesday, Ryan Castellanos (Jr., Davie, Fla.) and Zachary Westcott (R-Sr., Weston, Fla.) were named to the NCBWA All-South Region Second Team. Castellanos tossed a SSC-high 90.2 innings in 2015, earning nine wins. Westcott was the most dominant pitcher in the SSC this year, posting a 0.70 ERA against conference opponents.

The Sharks will face Lynn University (34-13-1, 14-9-1 SSC) on Thursday at noon ET, opening the tournament on the grounds of the No. 1 seed and host site West Alabama. Be sure to follow along with the team on Twitter (@NSU_Baseball) and tune in to each game following the links on the schedule page.
