Broward Sheriff’s Office Awarded NSU’s Quality of Life “Outstanding Community Partner of the Year”
Nova Southeastern University President/CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., along with Quality of Life Chair Kimberly Durham, Psy.D., recently recognized the Broward Sherriff’s Office (BSO) as the “Quality of Life Outstanding Community Partner of the Year.” The award celebrates the way in which BSO has continually exceeded expectations through their dedication of time and resources, to sponsor NSU’s Quality of Life faculty community-based applied research in Broward County.
Accordingly, BSO has shown its dedication to the Quality of Life mission which is to “take the most serious problems affecting the quality of life in Broward County, bring the best minds of NSU’s faculty, students, and community providers to bear, and the results will be a better quality of life for Broward County.”
Under Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti, BSO has generously funded NSU research aimed at improving the criminal justice system on both a local and national level. Through joint research, training of NSU students, educational opportunities in Executive Leadership as examples, NSU and BSO have been recognized as one of four university-community partnerships out of 2,000 exemplifying best practices across the United States.
For example, over the past year, BSO has collaborated with NSU on several projects including, “Armed Encounters.” In this study, BSO and NSU worked to analyze the increase in officer fatalities following armed encounters with suspects. By analyzing these incidents and subsequent procedures, this study has been able to provide useful training and policy recommendations that have both local and national implications. Through its hands-on approach to improving the quality of life for Broward County residents, BSO typifies what community collaboration can do for research and education.
