Biology Students Present Mathematical Research at Joint Conference

mathAlfredo Janson and Bibi Juman, biology majors at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, co-presented their mathematics research at the annual Joint Meetings of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America and the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association, held at Edison State College in Fort Myers, Florida, Feb. 21–22.

About the Research

Title: “Differentiation of Solutions of Second-Order BVPs with Integral Boundary Conditions”

Janson’s and Juman’s research involves differentiating solutions of boundary value problems with integral conditions, as well as showing that the resulting functions solve an associated boundary value problem—called the variational equation—with new integral boundary values.

The project stems from a fall 2013 independent study course with faculty adviser Jeffrey Lyons, Ph.D., assistant professor at the college. The pair also presented on this topic at NSU in December, as part of the college’s Mathematics Colloquium Series.

Janson’s and Juman’s research has also been accepted for publication in the academic journal Dynamic Systems and Applications. The article is set to appear later this year.
