Athletic Training Students Aid Sharks at Cross Country Championships

When the Sharks hosted the 2011 Sunshine State Conference Cross Country Championships at Markham Park on Oct. 22, the event—and its participants—seemed to run a bit smoother. That’s thanks in part to eight students from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences athletic training program, who volunteered at the morning meet.

Students who volunteered to help runners cross the finish line were Diandra Brown, Valentina Bustamante, Ulysse Charles, Amanda Leon, Lindsay Minthorn, Katie Ostrovecky, Susana Placencia, and Melanie Spicola.

“[The students] did an exceptional job at the finish line, coordinating the runners through the finish chute and providing first-rate medical service,” said Keith Smith, assistant director of athletics at NSU, commending the students’ efforts.

The meet is just one of the many university and community events that have benefited from the athletic training students’ volunteer service. In August, 13 students from the program—including Brown, Bustamante, Leon, and Placencia—provided aid at Camp Katina, the annual gymnastics event for local children hosted by Jason and Katina Taylor.

“Students from our athletic training major continue to serve the community and exude the highest level of professionalism,” said Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.
