Nova Southeastern University, in conjunction with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, have begun a research project – Armed Encounters. The goal of the Armed Encounters project is to gather specific tactical details for all encounters between police officers and civilians, in Broward County, where a gun is discharged by either the officer or civilian.

The group will review in-depth breakdowns of armed incidents to  identify trends on how these types of encounters occur. Reviews will include discussions on the similarities in tactics from officer to officer as well as suspect to suspect, the types of weapons used in these encounters, how effective they were, the distances between the officer and the suspect and the effect of same on their accuracy. The team will also review the level of training and experience of officers, backgrounds of the suspects, and how each of these factors play a role in an armed encounter. By looking at what worked as well as what didn’t, the team will develop a more complete picture of what law enforcement agencies should incorporate into their training. The Armed Encounters task force has begun to compile information regarding shootings from the year 2000 – 2008 for law enforcement agencies in Broward County.
