An Afternoon with Jane Austen at the Alvin Sherman Library, Dec. 8
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Join us and other Jane Austen enthusiasts on Sunday, Dec. 8 for an afternoon of fun and learning with a series of lectures, dance lessons and a costume promenade. Presented by NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library and the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA).

Jane Austen’s Tips for Authors: What fiction writers can learn from Austen’s Pride & Prejudice.
Lynne Barrett is the author of three books of short stories, The Secret Names of Women, The Land of Go, and most recently Magpies, winner of the Gold Medal in Fiction in the Florida Book Awards. She also has done some editing, including The Florida Book Review. Her work appears in several journals and anthologies. A recipient of the Edgar Award for Best Mystery Story and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, she is a Professor of English at FIU, teaching in the MFA program in Creative Writing. Decoding the Shadow Story BEHIND the Surface Story of Pride & Prejudice; or: Elizabeth Bennet is also Clueless!
Arnie Perlstein, Independent Austen Scholar, will lead an interactive discussion of this novel as a mystery story, in which Austen’s textual ambiguities allow alternative perspectives on the well known characters, learning to see them in a fresh new light.

Learn traditional English partnered folk/country dancing popular during the Regency period. Lou Dow is a Contra Dance caller based in Miami.
