Alumni Spotlight: Former Shark Mike Fiers Throws No Hitter
Former NSU baseball player Mike Fiers (2009) threw a no-hitter for the Houston Astros against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday evening in Minute Maid Park. Fiers is the first NSU alum to throw a no-hitter in Major League Baseball.
“I was a little shaky in the first three innings, but I was able to get it together and stop walking guys and start going after guys and throwing the right pitches,” said Fiers according to MLB.com. “But you don’t think, ‘OK, this is a game I can throw a no-hitter.’ I don’t take any game for granted. At any time guys can put a bunch of hits together and put you out of the game, so you’ve got to bear down on every hitter.”
Fiers picked up a trio of walks early, but went on to strike out 10 batters over 134 pitches thrown, a new career high. The winning effort pushed the Astros, who just recently acquired Fiers, to a 3.5 game lead over the Angels in the AL West.
